The Lager Illusion: Why Not All Crisp Pints Are Created Equal
As the sun finally starts making a regular appearance over Bridgend, our fridges at Nearest Beer Shop see a massive shift. The heavy winter stouts move to the back, and the crisp, golden cans migrate to the front.
But here is a secret: brewing a truly world-class lager is actually the hardest job in craft beer. Because the flavour profile is so delicate and clean, there are no massive roasted malts or thick fruit additions for a brewer to hide behind. Any flaw is instantly exposed.
If you are used to drinking mass-produced supermarket pints, it is easy to think “lager is just lager.” But the craft world is full of distinct, incredible styles. Here is our quick guide to the different lagers you’ll find on our shelves this spring.
1. The Snappy Classic: Pilsner
The Vibe: Crisp, bitter, and incredibly refreshing.
The Flavour: Originating from the Czech Republic (and perfected in Germany), the true Pilsner is all about the hops. Brewers use traditional “Noble” hops—like Saaz or Hallertau Mittelfrüh—which give the beer a distinct spicy, floral, and slightly herbal aroma. It finishes with a sharp, snappy bitterness that instantly cleanses the palate.
2. The Bready Comforter: Munich Helles
The Vibe: Soft, malty, and incredibly smooth.
The Flavour: “Helles” simply translates to bright or pale in German. If a Pilsner leans into hop bitterness, a Helles leans into the malt. Expect a beautifully soft, bready, and slightly sweet flavour that tastes a bit like fresh biscuits. The hop presence is dialed way back just to balance the sweetness, making it a brilliantly easy-drinking pint.
3. The Ultimate Thirst Quencher: American Light Lager
The Vibe: Bone-dry, highly carbonated, and light as a feather.
The Flavour: While the macro-breweries made this style famous (and sometimes a bit watery), modern independent craft brewers are taking it back. By brewing with a touch of flaked maize (corn) or rice alongside the barley, they create a beer with an incredibly light body and a brilliant, sparkling clear colour. It is the ultimate ice-cold reward after a long hike up the Bwlch.
4. The Modern Crossover: India Pale Lager (IPL)
The Vibe: The crispness of a lager, but the juicy punch of an IPA.
The Flavour: This is where modern craft brewers get to show off. They take a clean, cold-fermented lager base and heavily dry-hop it with modern, fruity hops like Citra, Mosaic, or Nelson Sauvin. You get massive aromas of crushed gooseberry, tropical mango, and citrus zest, but instead of the heavy, thick finish of an IPA, it finishes clean, crisp, and incredibly dry.
5. The Toasted Classic: Vienna Lager
The Vibe: Copper-coloured, elegantly toasted, and perfectly balanced.
The Flavour: If you usually drink traditional British ales or best bitters but want the refreshing snap of a cold spring pint, this is your perfect bridge. Vienna Lagers use slightly darker, gently toasted malts that give the beer a beautiful amber colour. You get gorgeous flavours of baked bread crust, light caramel, and toasted nuts, all finishing with that signature, clean lager crispness.
