Pucker Up: The Ultimate Field Guide to Summer Refreshment
If you’ve wandered past our shop window lately, you’ll have noticed a distinct color shift on the shelves. As the days finally get longer and (hopefully) warmer here in South Wales, the deep, dark browns of winter stouts are making way for a vibrant explosion of pinks, yellows, and oranges.
It’s May. The sun is hitting the streets of Bridgend. You want a beer, but you want something crisp, tart, and undeniably fresh. You want a Summer Sour.
We know that “sour beer” can sound like a contradiction, and to the uninitiated, it can even be a bit intimidating. But trust us: this is the ultimate category for warm-weather drinking, and we have a feeling you’re going to fall in love with it.
Demystifying the Pucker
Let’s get this out of the way first: sour beer isn’t “bad” beer. It’s not beer that has gone off. It is intentionally brewed using specific yeasts and bacteria that produce that characteristic tart, zesty acidity.
The result isn’t necessarily like biting into a raw lemon; it’s often subtle, fruity, and incredibly clean-finishing. Think of it less like a standard beer and more like a craft alternative to white wine, sparkling cider, or even a spritz.
Navigating the Summer Sour Spectrum
Not all sours are created equal. Depending on the brewing process and the ingredients added, they can range from gently tart to face-puckeringly intense. Here are the three most common styles you’ll find in our fridge right now:
1. The Fruited Sour (The Tropical Bomb) This is, without a doubt, the most popular style in the UK right now. These are “kettle sours” (which creates a clean, acidic base) that are then packed with massive amounts of fresh fruit purée. These are the colorful cans you see everywhere.
The Vibe: Sunny, vibrant, and incredibly smooth.
The Flavour: Expect an explosion of fresh fruit—think mango, raspberry, pineapple, or guava. These often drink like the best premium fruit juice you’ve ever had, but with a grown-up, tart finish.
Perfect for: Anyone who loves fruity cocktails or juice. It’s the ultimate starter sour.
2. The Gose (The Zesty & Salty Twist) This is an ancient German style that has made a massive comeback in the craft world. It’s a wheat beer base with additions of salt and coriander.
The Vibe: Ultra-crisp, bright, and genuinely “cleansing.”
The Flavour: The salt doesn’t make it taste like seawater; it acts like a seasoning to enhance the citrusy zest and creates an unbelievably refreshing, almost “rehydrating” mouthfeel.
Perfect for: The hottest day of the year. If you love white wine with high acidity, this is your beer.
3. The Berliner Weisse (The Tart & Tangy Classic) The lightest and simplest form of sour beer. These are low ABV, unfiltered, wheat-based beers that offer a sharp, lemony tang. They are incredibly effervescent and clean.
The Vibe: Minimalist, snappy, and light.
The Flavour: Crisp and very dry. The sourness is focused and sharp, like a squeeze of fresh lemon over cracked ice.
Perfect for: Fans of gin and tonic or very dry prosecco.
Skip the Supermarket, Shop Local
You might find one or two sours in the big supermarkets, but they usually pale in comparison to the vibrancy and complexity of the beers coming from the UK’s best independent breweries.
Nothing beats wandering in, having a proper chat about what you usually like, and letting us point you toward something new. We have a fridge full of fresh, tart, and tropical sours waiting to be paired with your next BBQ or sunny evening.
