A wooden bar top displaying four local Bridgend food and craft beer pairings against a blurred background of beer cans. Large text reads 'BEYOND THE CRISPS: BRIDGEND TOWN CENTRE FOOD PAIRINGS'. From left to right, text labels point to each pairing: 'GORDON'S DELI & PILSNER' next to a charcuterie board and a tall glass of pale lager; 'BEAT BAKEHOUSE & WEST COAST IPA' next to a sausage roll and a tulip glass of golden ale; 'POGO BAKERY & PASTRY STOUT' next to a slice of chocolate cake and a snifter of dark stout; and 'BAKESTONES & TRADITIONAL PALE ALE' next to a stack of Welsh cakes and a classic pint glass of amber ale. Fresh green hop cones are scattered along the bar.

Beyond the Crisps: Pairing Craft Beer with Bridgend Town Centre’s Best Flavours

Welcome back! As much as I love tearing into a bag of Scampi Fries or salty peanuts at the end of the week, we are doing craft beer a massive disservice if we stop there. Modern beer has an incredible spectrum of flavour that can easily stand toe-to-toe with fine wine when it comes to food pairing.

We are incredibly lucky here in Bridgend to share our town centre with some fantastic independent food makers. So, I’ve put together a hyper-local pairing guide. Take a stroll down the high street, grab your grub from these local legends, and then pop into Nearest Beer Shop to find the perfect liquid companion.

1. The Artisan Deli Board: Gordon’s Deli & A Crisp Pilsner

  • The Local Hero: A true Bridgend staple, Gordon’s Deli is the absolute go-to for incredible cheeses, cured meats, and deli counter perfection.

  • The Perfect Pour: A snappy, dry-hopped Pilsner or a zippy, tart Fruited Sour.

  • Why it Works: If you are loading up on rich meats and sharp cheeses, a crisp, cold-stored Pilsner acts as the ultimate palate cleanser. The crackery malt profile of the lager complements fresh bread, while the noble hops cut through the richness of the cheese without overpowering it.

2. The Savoury Masterpiece: Beat Bakehouse & West Coast IPA

  • The Local Hero: Located right by the station on Station Hill, Beat Bakehouse serves up some of the most incredible, freshly baked artisanal treats, sausage rolls, and deep-filled sandwiches.

  • The Perfect Pour: A classic, piney West Coast IPA or a robust, traditional British Bitter.

  • Why it Works: Rich, buttery pastry and perfectly seasoned meat coat the palate. You need a beer that can scrub it clean. The sharp, resinous bitterness and crisp carbonation of a West Coast IPA slice right through the fat, while the hop profile acts almost like a perfectly spiced chutney alongside the savoury filling.

3. The Sweet Treat: PoGo Bakery & Pastry Stout

  • The Local Hero: Run by a brilliant team right here on Wyndham Street, PoGo Bakery is famous for its mouth-watering sweet bakes and cakes.

  • The Perfect Pour: A thick, decadent Pastry Stout or a rich Imperial Coffee Porter.

  • Why it Works: It sounds intense to pair sweet with sweet, but it is absolute magic. The dark, heavily roasted malts of a big stout cut through the sugar of a rich brownie or cake, while the chocolate and coffee notes in the beer elevate the bake. It’s an indulgence you have to try at least once.

4. The Welsh Classic: Bakestones & Traditional Pale Ale

  • The Local Hero: You can’t talk about Bridgend town centre without mentioning Bakestones. They’ve been fueling the town with incredible traditional bakes, fresh bread, and the best Welsh cakes around.

  • The Perfect Pour: A well-balanced, modern Pale Ale or a classic British Best Bitter.

  • Why it Works: A hearty, savoury bake demands a beer with a solid malt backbone. A caramel-leaning pale ale matches the comforting warmth of traditional pastry and bread, while a gentle hop character lifts the whole experience. (And if you’re pairing it with a warm Welsh cake, a lightly roasted Amber Ale works wonders with the spices and currants!)
